Una ondata di suicidi tra gli adolescenti si registra in città. I giovani salvati in extremis vengono ricoverati nella clinica del dottor Gordon. I ragazzi si rifiutano di dormire perché è proprio nel sonno che si manifestano degli incubi terrificanti: un uomo mostruoso dalle unghie che sono rasoi ne tormenta lo spirito e il corpo. Secondo una nuova assistente da poco unitasi al gruppo dei medici, gli incubi sono causati dalla ricomparsa di Freddy Krueger, un maniaco massacratore di bambini, poi bruciato dai genitori. Per sconfiggere il carnefice, l'unico modo è fare ricorso ai poteri soprannaturali della giovane Kristen.
