Review:
Heaven Hang Over Me was created solely by Andrew McLeod who wrote, performed, produced, mixed, and recorded it all on their own. The multi-talented artist (who is also currently a member of OMBIIGIZI and Zoon) has gravitated toward making a new solo album with “heavier music”, as they’ve always wanted to. Where previous LP “The best that I can be.”, tentatively expanded their musical butterfly wings beyond the cocoon of their several previous solo releases, tenderly exploring the internal battle of processing the death of a close friend, this new album sees Sunnsetter building an unapologetic outward-facing sonic palate while genre mashing tones and textures. The theme of dealing with ever-present anxiety is present in tracks like “Fear it comes in waves”, ”I want to live (the body is a place of rest)”, and “I feel everything”. The new alternative version of “I ACTUALLY DON’T WANNA DIE” (originally released on the 2018 album “Worrybody”), re-recorded with McLeod’s new live band, shows Sunnsetter’s current musical mindset blending in a masterful collision of soft and loud, and genres that both whiplashes the listener and sonically appeases the soul with the melodic dexterity they achieve within a tidal wave of sound. The LP title is drawn from a misheard Nirvana lyric (in 1993’s In Utero track, ‘Dumb’). When Cobain sings “have a hangover now” it translated to Andrew’s ears as “heaven hang over now”, an earworm that has stuck with them. — bandcamp
