ll vero esorcismo di Emma Schmidt del 1928 è il più terrificante e documentato della storia, riconosciuto dalla Chiesa e che ha ispirato decenni di orrore. Dopo anni di comportamenti inquietanti, Emma (Abigail Cowen) subì un lungo calvario di rituali condotti da Padre Theophilus Riesinger (Al Pacino) con l’aiuto di Padre Joseph Steiger (Dan Stevens). I due preti, uno in crisi con la propria fede e l’altro perseguitato da un oscuro passato, dovettero unire le forze per eseguire una serie di estenuanti e terrificanti esorcismi per salvare l’anima della giovane donna.
